Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro called the fire, "historic in its magnitude", because of the number of lives lost.

"That's his nature", said 62-year-old Kwabena Mensah.

The New York Times reports that Mensah passed away due to smoke inhalation while saving people from a burning apartment building that neighbored his own residence.

Fire officials in NY say the fatal fire that broke out in the Bronx on Thursday was caused by a child playing with a kitchen stove. "He tried to do his best". The apartment building at 2363 Prospect Ave., is about half a mile from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in the Bronx, the northernmost borough in New York City.

Neighborhood resident Robert Gonzalez, who has a friend who lives in the building, says she got out on a fire escape. They were trying to come out to the stairs and he stopped them. "Then he went in and tried to rescue people out".

Emmanuel's body was recovered from another apartment on the same floor, the father said.

The father lives next door to the now non-existent building.

The father, who lives next door to the now-gutted building, had spent much of Thursday and Friday visiting hospitals, waiting for word from his son and holding out hope he was still alive. But the flames moved so fast, spreading through every floor of the building within minutes, that many never made it out of their apartments.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement on Twitter, "I want to offer my prayers to all the families who have lost their loved ones this evening or who are struggling".

"What we think at this point is unfortunately it emanated from an accident - a young child playing with a stove on the first floor", de Blasio said on WNYC Radio "It spread rapidly upward ... accidental from everything we can see", the mayor said.
